Navigation is a proven aid to the driver, and in its current very sophisticated form is also a major safety benefit. No longer does a motorist have to have a map book open on the seat beside them, or be driving much slower than traffic while they search for street names, wondering whether they are still heading toward their destination. Instead, the navigation system's voice feature can prompt and warn the driver of direction changes and other actions. Another BMW technology available as an option later this year is head-up display (HUD), which projects information directly onto the inside of the windscreen in front of the driver thereby allowing them to keep their eyes on the road infront of them.
